Boston City League quick hitters – February 3, 2014

Some quick hitters from the Boston City League as we start the first full week of February:

  • There’s not a lot of drama in two of the division races. New Mission is running away with the North as they are 9-0, with Charlestown and Madison Park both at 6-4. All three schools will be in the state tournament, but New Mission is the one with a chance to make a deep run. Dorchester is three games up on Boston English in the Central and also scored a nice win over Cambridge Rindge & Latin.
  • Brighton has a young team that we’ll take a look at soon, but their win at Charlestown last week may be a sign that they’re starting to grow up at just the right time. They’re now at .500 overall entering this week.
  • The one division with some drama is the South, where Burke is 5-5 and Snowden is 4-4, meaning that Wednesday’s meeting between the two will be big.
  • Can teams like Boston English and West Roxbury get into the state tournament? Both are a game below .500 with at least a half dozen games left. English has perhaps the best point guard in the city in junior Stanley Davis leading the way, while West Roxbury getting to the tournament would be big given that their best player left before the season.
  • O’Bryant is another team whose talent we’ll look at in more detail soon, but Drew Hughes-Brock’s team isn’t as far away from success as their 4-11 mark would lead one to believe. They actually have a positive scoring margin on the season as they have struggled to pull out a number of close games.
