City-Catholic Challenge: Boston City League teams

Coming up on Saturday, March 29, 2014 is the City-Catholic Challenge. The event will match up three teams from the Boston City League – one for each division – against three teams from the Catholic Central League and Catholic Conference. The games will be played in the Clark Athletic Center at UMass-Boston.

The schedule of games is as follows:

1:00 p.m.          Boston City League South vs. Catholic Central Small
3:00 p.m.          Boston City League Central vs. Catholic Central Large
5:00 p.m.          Boston City League North vs. Catholic Conference

First, we take a look at the selections for the Boston City League teams.

The first game will have Paul Rogers from South Division champion Snowden coaching the team. The team features three players from the champs, led by Javaughn Kittrell (6’2″ Jr. G), who made the Boston City League All-Tournament team, with Kareem Murrell (5’10” Sr. G) and Derron Stone (6’3″ Sr. F) rounding them out. Jeremiah Burke, who finished second in the division, also had three selections consisting of seniors Jesse Bland (5’10” Sr. G) and Keshon Robinson (5’8″ Sr. G) and junior Jikhalil Smith (6’7″ Jr. F). South Boston teammates Solomon Abioye (6’3″ Jr. F) and Billy Jordan (6’0″ Sr. G) are joined by Patrick Mansuy (6’2″ Sr. F, Fenway) and Kidante Roberts (6’0″ Sr. G, CASH) to round out the team.

The second game will have the Central Division team coached by Johnny Williams of Dorchester, who won the division. Dorchester will have three players, led by the backcourt tandem of Khalil Newson (6’1″ Sr. G) and Markus Neale (6’1″ Sr. G) along with active forward Tevon Smallpiece (6’2″ Sr. F). Boston Latin Academy finished second in the division and will have emerging point guard Rayshawn Miller (Jr. G) and DeVaughn Riley (6’1″ Sr. G) playing in the game. O’Bryant placed two seniors on the team in athletic wing Joseph Farrell (6’4″ Sr. F) and Ben Lawler (6’5″ Sr. F), who gives them a post player. Boston English placed a pair of guards in Stanley Davis (Jr. G) and Shawn Miller (Sr. G), and rounding out the team is Ruel Delarosa, a three-sport star at West Roxbury.

The last game of the day will have the North Division team led by Cory McCarthy from Division 2 state champion New Mission. This team will have more size than the other two teams from the league and thus more of an inside presence to go with the talented perimeter players. The Titans have three players in the game, all seniors: Shaquan Murray (6’1″ Sr. G), Asante Sandiford (6’4″ Sr. F) and Fred Rivers (6’4″ Sr. F). East Boston finished second and will be represented by scorer Dion Knight (Jr. G), while Brighton will have Jason Jones (6’5″ Jr. F) and Mark Mojica (6’0″ Sr. G). Charlestown teammates Taris Wilson (6’3″ Sr. G), who can score with any guard in the league, and versatile Freddy Oliveira (6’6″ Sr. F), will also play, and rounding out the team is Terell Matthews (6’2″ Sr. G, Madison Park HS), a very athletic wing, and teammate Johnny Bowden (5’9″ Sr. G).
