City-Catholic Challenge: Catholic Central and Catholic Conference teams

Coming up on Saturday, March 29, 2014 is the City-Catholic Challenge. We have already seen the selections for the three teams from the Boston City League. Now, we take a look at the selections for the Catholic Central and Catholic Conference teams.

The first game of the day will feature a team from the Catholic Central Small, led by Division 4 state champion Saint Clement. Leo Boucher will coach the team, featuring five Anchormen, that won 24 straight games after losing the season opener. Highlighting the selections is the best player in Division 4, two-sport star Khaneil Bruce (6’4″ Sr. F). Quick point guard Brandon Williams (5’8″ Jr. G) and shooter Emaru Pena (5’11” Jr. G), who came up big in the championship game, are joined on the perimeter by Jack Hartnett (6’2″ Jr. G). The last of the Anchormen on the team, Eamonn Joyce (6’7″ Jr. C), will be one of the top big men in the MIAA next year and was a big factor in the championship win with his play on the glass. Lowell Catholic finished second in the division and will be represented by their frontcourt tandem of Mustafa Koroma (6’2″ Sr. F) and Yi Shi (6’4″ Jr. C). Ayodeji Johnson (6’3″ Sr. F, Marian HS) rounds out the frontcourt, with Tim Collins (6’1″ Jr. G, Pope John) and Rich Gilbride (5’11” Jr. G, Austin Prep), the latter of whom also stars on the baseball diamond, rounding out the perimeter players.

In the second game, the Catholic Central Large will be led by Bishop Fenwick coach John Preziosa. Headlining the team are four players from Division 3 state champion Cardinal Spellman, including the stellar backcourt of Ryan Roach (5’11” Sr. G) and Austin Joseph (5’10” Sr. G) and the frontcourt tandem of Rory Donovan (6’6″ Sr. F) and Joe Crane (6’4″ Sr. F-C). St. Mary’s of Lynn, who finished second in the division and made it to the Division 4 North sectional final, has three players: floor leader Dennis Bailer (Jr. G), active wing Curtis Lockett (Jr. G) and Zach Louissaint (Sr. F). Bishop Fenwick teammates Matt Costello (6’3″ Sr. F) and Dom Luoni (6’2″ Sr. G) will round out the team along with Donell Berryman (6’1″ So. G, Cathedral HS).

The last game of the day will feature the Catholic Conference team, coached by Denis Tobin of Catholic Memorial, who went undefeated in league play this year. Five CM players headline the team, with big man Gerard Adams (6’8″ Sr. C) flanked by four guards: shooter Kellan Grady (6’2″ So. G), scorer Brandon Twitty (6’1″ So. G), floor leader Aamahne Santos (5’9″ Jr. G) and do-everything guard Guilien Smith (6’1″ Jr. G). Twitty has the most upside of all of them, while Smith has the academics to potentially play in the Ivy or Patriot League. Xaverian’s lone representative is Tim Riley (6’2″ Jr. G-F), while three other teams placed three players each. St. John’s Prep, who finished second, will be represented by Max Burt (6’0″ Sr. G), Kareem Davis (5’8″ Jr. G) and Max Butterbrodt (6’4″ Sr. F-C). BC High has active forward Phil Leotsakos (6’6″ Sr. F), sharp-shooter Jack Loughnane (6’2″ So. G) and Tom Galanek (6’2″ Sr. G). Rounding out the team are three players from Malden Catholic: athletic guard Karlens Joas (6’3″ Jr. G), floor leader Joe O’Brien (5’9″ Jr. G) and Michael Boyd (5’9″ Fr. G), who will be the only freshman playing on Saturday.
